The conversation around Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) often gets bogged down in dollar signs and "deals." But after reflecting on our recent conversations with multiple college coaches, outside of the “big 2” sports (football & basketball), a much more inspiring trend is emerging.
When you strip away the hype, many student-athletes aren't just looking for a paycheck; they’re looking for a purpose. Here is what’s actually driving the next generation of leaders.
1. Legacy Over Likeness: Building a Brand with Soul
Today’s athletes are incredibly savvy. They understand that their playing days are a finite window, and they want to use that visibility to build something that outlasts their jersey number.
- Mission-Driven Identity: They want to align their personal brands with causes they actually care about, whether that’s mental health, education, or community equity.
- The "Social ROI": For many, the success of an NIL deal isn't measured just by the fee, but by the tangible impact they make in the community.
2. The Power of the Pivot: Developing the "How-To"
One of our biggest findings is that while athletes have the passion, they are hungry for the protocol. They are looking for:
- Blueprint Training: Concrete workshops on how to integrate social impact into their professional strategy.
- Mission Articulation: Media training that goes beyond the "one game at a time" cliches, helping them find their voice to speak on complex community issues.
- Vetted Partnerships: They need a bridge to nonprofits and brands that share their values, ensuring their influence is used authentically.
3. Mental Health and Sustainable Influence
The pressure of the NIL era is real. Athletes are looking for frameworks that support their well-being while they navigate these new responsibilities.
- They value opportunities that feel sustainable, not just "one-off" social media posts.
- They are prioritizing relationships that offer mentorship and long-term career development rather than just a transaction.
The New Playbook
The "Win | Win" isn't just a catchy name, it's the only way forward. When we empower student-athletes to lead with their values, we aren't just helping them navigate a market; we’re helping them navigate their future.
To the student-athletes: We have officially rolled out a Student-Athlete Social Impact Interest Survey. We are using this to build out our issue-interest database so we can match athletes' organic passions with the right nonprofit and corporate partners.
To our fellow coaches: Please pass it on to your team. It only takes about 3 minutes to fill out.
