ESA Launches Accessible Games Initiative to Empower Players with Disabilities

Featured Focus:
Access / Inclusion / Equality, Education, Innovation

Scope of Impact: Nationwide

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has launched the Accessible Games Initiative, a collaborative effort to provide clear information about accessibility features in video games. Here's the breakdown:

  • Empowering Players: Standardized tags on game listings will detail accessibility features, like subtitles and control remapping, aiding millions with disabilities in making informed choices before purchasing.

  • Industry Advantage: Developers can showcase their commitment to inclusivity by adopting these tags, reaching a wider audience and fostering social responsibility.

  • Future-Forward Gaming: With support from major players like EA, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Ubisoft, this initiative aims for a future where gaming is accessible to all.

On the heels of DL47, where the International Paralympic Committee’s president advocated for greater access to para-sports to increase accessibility worldwide, we’re doubling down with this story on the Accessible Games Initiative by the ESA and its founding members.

By offering clear guidelines for game developers, it encourages the integration of accessibility from the ground up, rather than as an afterthought. This proactive approach has the potential to reduce social isolation and enhance the gaming experience for millions. The initiative's commitment to evolve based on community feedback also ensures its long-term relevance and impact.

It goes without saying that even though this is a commendable project from Electronic Arts, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, and Ubisoft, these companies also stand to benefit from it by broadening their market of players. But we believe there’s nothing wrong with gaining a consumer edge when it goes hand-in-hand with meaningful impact.
