Fan's Kindness Honors Gallagher's Late Mother in Emotional On-Ice Jersey Swap

Featured Focus:
Athlete-Driven Impact, Health & Wellness

Scope of Impact: Individual

Brendan Gallagher's connection with a Montreal Canadiens’ fan highlights the profound impact empathy can have within sports. Here’s the breakdown:

  • The Gesture: Following the passing of Gallagher's mother, Della, from brain cancer, lifelong Canadiens fan Lucie Lachance offered via social media to return a unique 2022 Hockey Fights Cancer jersey she'd won at auction. Gallagher had worn this jersey, inscribing "Mom" on its "I Fight For" patch.

  • The Response: Deeply moved by the kindhearted gesture, Gallagher didn't just accept; he proposed an on-ice jersey swap. He suggested exchanging his game-worn jersey from the Canadiens' final home game for the HFC jersey, elevating the interaction to a mutual show of respect.

  • The Exchange: After Montreal clinched a playoff spot, Gallagher and Lachance met at center ice. He gifted her his signed game jersey, and she presented him with the treasured HFC jersey, a poignant tribute witnessed by cheering fans.

This one is simply wholesome. Yes, we love how a kind gesture was amplified and turned into a memorable moment for the entire Canadians community, and for hockey fans worldwide. But what shines through the most is the humanity of it all.

Sports are the best connector. Fans share the joy, the angst, and the disappointment of the players they support —  because for many of them, they are more than mere athletes. They are role models for their kids. They are family members by way of being on their TV or mobile devices every single day. There is a special bond created between fans and players, and Lucie Lachance’s gesture was all about recognizing that connection, this time, sparked by loss and grief.

As Lachance said on the night of the ceremony, “people are telling me they need more positivity in their lives and I’m glad I could do it.”

That’s the reason why we launched WIN|WIN. We all need more positivity, and sport is a bottomless well of these kinds of stories. Together, we can make sure they’re seen and heard. All we ask is that you share them with us, so we can keep amplifying them with our growing community, and making this movement part of the fabric of our everyday lives.
