The evolution and expansion of LeBron James' philanthropic efforts in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, primarily through the LeBron James Family Foundation are nothing short of impressive. Initially focused on the "I PROMISE" program, which provides educational support and resources to at-risk students, the initiative has grown significantly.

The I PROMISE School, opened in 2018, is a public school within the Akron Public Schools system, specifically designed to address the academic and social-emotional needs of students who have fallen behind. Beyond the school, the foundation's initiatives now include the I PROMISE Village (transitional housing), the I PROMISE Housing development (affordable housing), and House Three Thirty (a community center and job training facility). The latter features a variety of vocational training options, retail spaces, and a sports complex. Chase has also been tapped as a partner to lead financial literacy training.

These projects are interconnected, aiming to provide a comprehensive support system for students and their families. The foundation's long-term goal is to create systemic change in Akron by addressing the root causes of educational inequality and poverty, focusing on education, housing, job training, and community building. As Raymond Hart, executive director of the Council of the Great City Schools, says “strengthening the community is an important part of strengthening our schools.” And, that has become the north star of this project for the LeBron James Family Foundation.
