Scope of Impact: Local
We’d be lying if we said we weren’t excited about this being our 100th Daily Download at WIN | WIN, and it’s such a great story to mark the occasion.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), the owner of the Capitals, Wizards, Mystics, and GoGo, has launched a Girls Empowerment Program in Washington D.C., helping to reshape the landscape for young female athletes and coaches throughout the metro region. Here’s what you should know:
Building a Female Coaching Pipeline: MSE is committing nearly half a million dollars to develop female coaching talent through a partnership with Coach Across America’s She Changes the Game® initiative. This aims to place at least 40 women coaches in D.C. sports programs over four years, reaching over 1,000 K-12 youth.
Dismantling Participation Barriers: The program actively removes practical obstacles to girls getting involved in sports. Initiatives include distributing over 29,000 basketballs via the "District Dribble" campaign, and providing essential sports bras to address a key reason girls discontinue sports during their pre-teen and teenage years.
Leveraging Professional Assets: The Washington Capitals' "ALL CAPS ALL HER" platform and the Mystics' "Her Time to Play" game provide powerful role models, inspiring young girls and fostering leadership skills through direct engagement with professional teams and athletes.
We’re big fans of Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s initiatives. Because they own of a number of Washington D.C sports teams, they’re able to cast a wider net and leverage their different entities to create broader and more diverse avenues for community impact.
The brilliance of their Girls Empowerment Program lies in its multi-faceted approach to breaking-down systemic barriers. By simultaneously addressing the scarcity of female coaches, the lack of appropriate equipment, and the need for visible role models, MSE solidifies the entire ecosystem for girls' sports in the D.C. area.
Similar to what we’ve seen in Flag Football recently with added support for quality officiating (check out DL86), MSE’s commitment to building a female coaching pipeline creates a powerful multiplier effect, ensuring sustained engagement and leadership development for countless young girls. This isn't just about getting girls on the field; it's about equipping them with confidence and skills they can use off the field, too.
UPPING THE WIN
This initiative has so many arms and angles that there’s not much MSE has missed. We hope that from a visibility and awareness standpoint, they’re leveraging physical signage, in-game activations, and all of their social and digital channels to make sure that their fans, and the local community, are continually aware of opportunities to get involved.
Doing great work like this is amazing, and incredibly needed. Telling the right (and consistent) stories about it can really multiply the impact.
YOUR NEXT PLAY
We particularly love this initiative because it can serve as a blueprint to be replicated in other markets, even if you’re not in the same position of owning four major teams (we mean, who is, really?).
But now that you know what’s possible from a youth sports ecosystem standpoint, how can you both spread awareness about MSE’s efforts, and also spearhead a similar collaboration in your city/community?
