Phoenix Suns & Mercury Make $1M Healthcare Investment for Youth Athletes

Scope of Impact: Local

The Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and their joint foundation are injecting $1 million into youth sports medicine. This major initiative, announced in May 2025, partners with Banner Health to elevate care and opportunity for athletes in the local community. Here’s the play:

  • Access for All: The funds will provide 2,000 free sports physicals, 1,000 no-cost concussion tests, and 100 complimentary injury risk assessments, specifically targeting students who lack financial resources. This ensures more kids can safely pursue their passion.

  • Pro-Level Resources: A significant portion of the investment will boost Banner Sports Medicine’s Technology, Equipment & Innovation Fund, guaranteeing access to the latest advancements in athletic care. This way, more young athletes will be able to benefit from the same cutting-edge tools as the pros.

  • Holistic Development: The initiative also bankrolls a youth basketball combine for 100 athletes (ages 12-18), featuring expert coaching from orthopedic physicians, physical therapists, sports psychologists, and nutritionists. It’s about building complete athletes, both physically and mentally.

While the Phoenix Suns (nightmare season) and Phoenix Mercury (Diana Taurasi’s retirement) have had their fair share of challenges on the court this past year, Matt Ishbia — who bought the teams in February 2023 — continues to stack up wins off-the-court to benefit the Phoenix community at-large.

We love that local sports franchises and a healthcare organization are joining forces to not only identify a gap, but also strategically fill it. It’s a great example of how diverse stakeholders can work together to democratize access to the sports ecosystem as a whole — in this instance, specialized healthcares service and health equity for young athletes.

Another bonus: it’s easy to quantify the direct, tangible impact from this partnership. The long-term commitment creates opportunities to show progress, and potentially even bring additional partners or funding into the mix in the future. It’s a solid blueprint for building a stronger, healthier next generation of athletes in the Valley, while also deepening the fans’ bond with both teams. That’s what we call a WIN | WIN.
